"TLC led us in a process whereby we listened to the Holy Spirit as we considered His call on our lives. Our time together was highlighted with fellowship, laughter, prayer, testimonies, tears, worship, Bible Studies, sharing, and seeking God about the future of our church. Ultimately, the results went far beyond TLC's excellent leadership; the Lord delivered in mighty ways. I highly recommend the 'Vision Defining Seminar' to any church interested in discovering a more focused understanding of their God-given mission."
It takes vision, perspective, and mission for the church to have a clearly-defined sense of direction. It is important in the normal operations of the church, and especially so when a church is considering any improvements to its facilities (whether renovation, addition, relocation, or debt retirement). It can also be used when a church is in disagreement about its vision or primary purpose for serving in their own community, especially when there are multiple ways to accomplish the same goals. It is not designed to resolve major church problems.
A church without direction will wander throughout the field of opportunities without a steering wheel, carrying a load of obligation and guilt, supported by only a few of its people, usually limited by the ruts and routine it develops, overlooking a lot of needs around it, and seeing only minimal results for its efforts. Sadly, this is typical of most churches today.
Contrast this with Jesus who purposefully accomplished His mission on earth, as Hebrews 12:2 tells us – "... who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Since Christ has commissioned His church and His people to go into all the world in His behalf, it behooves us to do so with the same sense of focus and direction that He had.
The Vision Defining Seminar is designed to assist the church go beyond general statements of mission that have no practical impact upon the congregation to helping the church discover and develop the mission God has assigned to it. It is also designed to focus the energies of the congregation on its mission, and to encourage willing support from the people to fulfill it.
