Vision Defining Retreat

The Vision Defining Retreat (VDR) is a dedicated weekend where church leaders meet under the guidance of a trained Facilitator to refine, hone, and develop the mission, vision, and values of the church. It is sandwiched between a couple of months of preparation for it, and a couple of months following it to apply it to the church’s situation. It is customized for each church according to its unique situation, circumstances, and distinctives. The theme of the VDR is to Develop the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Church, and the People’s Ownership of Them.

The VDR has helped many churches to define their mission, develop their vision, determine their values, steer them down the path to effective ministry, and revitalize them for further Kingdom work as they fulfill the Great Commission in their local communities.

Some churches use this VDR when it is considering any improvements to its facilities (whether renovation, addition, relocation, or debt retirement). It can also be used when a church is undergoing a significant point of change in its ministry, or when the church engages a new lead pastor, or even when it wants to make sure it is still current in its ministries and programs. It is important to keep the church focused on its primary ministry objectives in an ever-changing world and in rapidly changing circumstances and demographics.

It can also be used when a church is not unified nor in full agreement about its vision and primary purpose for serving in its own community, especially when there are multiple ways to accomplish the same goals. It is not intended, however, to resolve major church problems.
